3 Portraits

Correy Taylor Cream, Caramel & Mocha, 2021 Digital piece 29.7cm x 21cm
I have created an A4 digital piece using Adobe Photoshop. I wanted to improve upon my favourite sketches that I created for the 100 Portraits Challenge, as I wanted to experiment with creating portraiture using a digital medium. I have been trying to experiment with Photoshop as I think that it allows me to create work that is faster paced and creates a more finalized piece of work. I decided that I wanted to sort of collage the three portraits together in one piece of work. I wanted to create a piece of work that not only celebrates women of different race and ethnic backgrounds but to represent the sort of topics that I like to illustrate within my practise. As a woman myself, I feel passionate about discussing issues that aren't widely talked about such as; trauma experienced in childbirth, Female Genital Mutilation, Gender Inequality, Sexual Assault and Harassment in Hollywood and many other topics. I wanted to create portraits in my style with the line-work and block colours. I decided to add a small amount of highlights to the face however, I wanted the definition to be simple instead of really detailed and realistic. I rarely get the chance to just improve certain skills that I believe that I am lacking in art such as; portraiture. As I don't feel completely comfortable with portraiture, I wanted to start pushing myself out of my comfort zone to improve upon my practise. I discovered that the older I become, the more I am aware of the importance of showcasing and representing different races and ethnic groups within my practise as a way to connect to a wider audience, but also creating a positive portrayal of different ethnic groups to be more inclusive. If I was to create a children's book for instance, It would be extremely important to show positive diversity within the characters so that children of all races and ethnic groups, can feel represented and also be educated by the level of diversity. I really enjoyed creating this digital piece of work because even though I have attended many life drawing classes, I have only ever drawn Caucasian people and I wanted this to change and to challenge myself by learning how to create different skin tones that look realistic and work in different mediums. Overall, I really love how this piece turned out and I think that the pale green background works really well with the colour of the clothing and I really enjoyed experimenting with portraiture. |
