I have created an A4 digital piece of work using Adobe Photoshop. I wanted to improve upon the illustrations that I created of various female characters of nurses, paramedics, doctors and other healthcare workers. I used to consider myself to be a traditional illustrator, who created art using traditional mediums. However, I have recently been enjoying the more overall professional look that digital art gives and I have recently purchased a WACOM One tablet that allows me to create digital illustrations using the pen which feels more natural to me than using a mouse. I discovered that when I use the mouse to draw, I have a very shaky hand and my line work is wobbly. The WACOM pen is a lot easier to draw with and I found that the smoothing tool on Photoshop, really helps straighten my line-work. I originally created these characters using a graphite pencil, I prefer to sketch my ideas first and then decided whether to take them digitally or use traditional mediums. The characters took a little while to finesse and I kept sketching until they looked complete. I then decided to outline them using fine-liner and then take the initial sketch into a digital piece. I knew that I had had an idea of what I wanted the colours on the character to look like and I really wanted all the characters to have little nurse hats on as I think they added to the vintage style that I gave to the nurse characters, with my own personal edge. I wanted their outfits to have a pastel theme to them and I love how it turned out. I really like the blonde character and her apron, she was partly inspired by Alice in Wonderland. I also really love the paramedic character in the green jumpsuit and I love her wild hair. I tried to portray nurses of different ages and races as a way to show the different types of healthcare workers, who are working so hard to keep vulnerable people safe during the COVID 19 pandemic. I think that these characters work really well with the rest of my work, creating health posters for my graduate portfolio. I created a simple background as I wanted to create a light coloured background, which represents the colours typically used in a hospital setting. I used the rectangle tool on Photoshop to create the flooring, using simple colours that work well with the pastel coloured nurses. Overall I think that the characters work really well together and I like how they look individually and could be taken into my health posters as a reminder to visit the doctors.
