Task 2 - Women. Time. Health
Task 2 - Women. Time. Health.
Correy Taylor Women. Time. Health. 2020 Watercolours on paper 21cm x 29.8cm During one of my illustration classes, I was given the task to list three key words that best describe my interests and ideas for my Graduate Portfolio module. For my third year studying Illustration, I want to create work that illustrates more interesting concepts and drawing styles to improve upon my practise. For task 2, I decided that I wanted to explore women's health in a new and exciting way. I am really passionate about illustrating women's issues within my practise and I believe that as an illustrator it is my duty to give a voice to those who want to discuss controversial topics, that aren't widely talked about in the media, but feel embarrassed or it's not their place. I am often inspired by medical research into the different discomforts and ailments that women experience during their lifetime. My initial ideas for task 2, was to create a piece of work that celebrates a women's lifetime. At first, I thought that I wanted to focus on puberty and the menstrual cycle. I wanted to create a series of period pants posters, that represented periods in different age groups. I decided to focus on a more sophisticated idea and I knew that I wanted to research in women's health and I decided to focus on diseases that affect women such as; Heart Disease, Lung Cancer, Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, Rhett's Syndrome etc,. I later decided that I wanted to represent a woman's lifetime by creating an hourglass with petals falling, to menopause and time running out. Over the span of a lifetime, you would feel drained and I wanted to show this in my idea. I used watercolours on high quality watercolour paper which really made a lot of difference and created a vibrant piece of work that is also subtle and not too over the top. To improve I would have fixed some tiny mistakes with the background colour as the watercolours missed a few spots but I really like the wood affect created using brown tones and I think that the colours work well together. Overall, I believe the piece was a success and the first time I had tried a more conceptual design. |
